Christmas

This was the most horrible Christmas I think I have ever had in my life. I had the whole day on Christmas Eve planned. I was going to bake cookies and make a chocolate cheesecake. Earlier that day I had woke up with a slight cough. Around 1:00 pm, I started feeling very nauseous. From that point on I started throwing up and had diaheorra . I had to work on Christmas Eve so I drug Clint and Amaya with me. By 11:00 pm when I had to be at work, I could not walk or stand up without throwing up. Amaya would not go to sleep until after 2:00 am. She was getting super cranky. To make matters worse I got into a fight with a guest at the hotel. He called me and demanded that I bring him a blanket. I explained to him that I wouldn't bring it to him but he could come pick it up at the front desk. That didn't satisfy him. He came down to the desk and wanted to know my name and told me that he played for the Baltimore Ravens and I would be sorry. He then picked up a bunch of cards and threw them at me. He got mad at Clint and then punched him in the face. I called the police and his wife begged me to tell them not to come. She was carrying her 2 year old daughter in her arms and I am a big softy.

Christmas Day was even worse. I couldn't stand up to cook or even watch Amaya open her presents. I was either curled into a ball on the couch or on the bathroom floor. I totally missed my little girl's first Christmas that she could actually open presents by herself. There were no pictures taken at all. She had a Christmas grilled cheese sandwich. There is nothing more guilt wrenching or sad than missing an important event in her life like that. She was making my heart ache because she didn't understand why mommy couldn't pick her up.

Clint did leave a few presents unwrapped under the tree so I could watch her open them. I got to take a picture of her opening her small presents. I missed the big expression when she opened her bigger presents though. :(

I hope everyone else had a Merry Christmas!

Sleep

Sleep is one thing I treasure very much. Someone asked me what I want for Christmas and I replied that I want to sleep all day long.

I made the decision to not work full time in the field that I have my bachelor's degree. I work the lovely 11pm-7am shift on the weekends as an auditor of a hotel so that I can stay at home with my Amaya. Clint doesn't get home from work until 8 or 9 pm. I get to take a one or 2 hour nap before I go to work. Of course Amaya is going through a no nap phase so I don't get to sleep during the day. So in one weekend Friday-Sunday I get between 3-6 hours of sleep total.

By Monday I am a total zombie. It is really hard for me to go back to sleep during normal sleeping hours. My body is in a total trance like state all day on Tuesday because it is confused by the sleep I got. By Thursday night I am finally able to sleep right and my body is back on track. I finally feel great by Friday and I have to go back to work that night.

Sometimes I feel like screaming because I am so tired. I was completely smoke free until I started working the vampire hours. Cigarettes help me stay awake. I have gained 20 lbs since I started working the vampire hours. At 3 am when I am tired and bored I grab a Snickers bar or eat pizza. I really think my body is suffering because of my work hours!

I wonder is staying home with Amaya worth my lack of sleep? Then I think of how smart she is because I get to teach her everyday. I also think about how we have such a great bond because I'm around her all day. Bring on the coffee, Snickers and cigarettes! Amaya is such a great baby. She is worth it!

Look how dang cute she is!

Thanksgiving

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We got to spend 5 days in Arkansas with family and friends. I saw people that I have not seen in over 4 years! Amaya is such a great traveler! As soon as the plane took off she went to sleep and woke up right after the landing. Motion has always made her go to sleep. She really got spoiled the whole trip by her grandparents, aunts and uncles. Everyone was giving us a guilt trip about how we have to move back to Arkansas soon.

Here is a little comparison of Amaya last year at Thanksgiving compared to this year.

14 Months Old!

Wow! I can't believe that my little baby is 14 months old! Amaya is actually running now! She is now really starting to exert her independence. It is amazing seeing her try to put on her own shoes, diapers and clothes. She will only eat if she feeds herself. She wants to brush her own hair and teeth. Her newly found independence=temper tantrums. We went to the grocery last week and she HAD to walk around by herself. She didn't want to go where I was going. There were too many people for her to walk around and talk to. Every time I tried to direct her to a different area of the store she threw a fit. I even tried picking her up a few times. When she gets mad she kicks her feet or pushes her head along the ground. I'm sure everyone in the entire store heard her! Note to self: Never leave my baby carrier at home when I go anywhere!

BUT, her separation anxiety is worse than it has ever been. On one hand she wants to Miss Independent. On the other hand she wants to be attached to her mom at all times. I can't leave the room for one second without her crying. I can't remember the last time I actually went to the bathroom alone. It is not really that bad though. I kind of enjoy it! I can see in the future when she is a teenager and wants nothing to do with me.

I just love seeing how much my little baby has changed!

Dear John McCain Voters

I hope this article will ease the worries for the people that voted for John McCain.

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/11/06-9

Dear John McCain Voters

by Matt Peiken

Dear John McCain voters:

It’s morning in America, and I understand you’re mourning. A black man is the next president of the United States and you’re afraid. You’re afraid Barack Obama will raise your taxes and take away your gun. You’re afraid he will encourage pregnant women to have late-term abortions. You’re afraid the government will make you sell your Hummer and see a Communist doctor. You’re afraid all those emails you received over the past few months are true—Barack Obama will take his oath on the Koran, promote homosexuality, outlaw Christian broadcasting, strip the phrase “bombs bursting in air” from the National Anthem, allow people on welfare to stay there, appoint Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to his cabinet in a plot to turn the White House black and help Islamic terrorists obliterate America.

So I write this open letter as a blanket of comfort and a bridge to your future. By the end of President Obama’s first term, you’ll pay fewer federal taxes than you do now, have more choice in healthcare, live your faith any way you choose, find that the rich are still rich, sing the National Anthem without learning a new verse and sleep well knowing your gun is still legally tucked beneath your pillow. The homosexuals you fear won’t destroy the sanctity of your marriage, would-be terrorists will find it more difficult to do this country harm and Al Sharpton will still be living in New York City.

But I won’t surgarcoat this—you will have to accept a measure of change. Immigrants of the 21st century will have as much opportunity as your forefathers did to live here legally and build productive lives in this country. Public education will have the funding to meet the standards of No Child Left Behind. Healthcare will be more widely accessible and affordable. Sex education won’t begin or end with abstinence. The unions that are responsible for higher wages, better insurance policies and stronger retirement benefits for American workers won’t be treated as enemy combatants. Freedom will mean more than the slogan on a magnetic ribbon. The government under Obama will be far less intrusive of your life than the government under Bush. Big business will have to operate more ethically, legally and transparently. Government will address global warming without arguing against the human contribution to it. Science and consensus, not faith, will guide policy. Industry lobbyists won’t write our nation’s energy, healthcare and telecommunications policies (yes, you can put away those “Drill, Baby, Drill” placards). Government regulators and overseers will regulate and oversee. The United States will once again recognize the Kyoto Treaty, the Geneva Convention, Darwinian evolution and democracy. Foreign policy will begin at a table, not on a battlefield. We will end the war we started and we won’t start another, knowing we can never leave Iraq in victory, only with honor.

I know—this might all seem too depressing. After all, you’ve stood by conservative ideology through thin and thinner, and now you’re looking in panic for an iconic beacon with a poll-tested narrative as your guide to tomorrow. So it probably will serve as little comfort to know that leaders and citizens around the world have now, instantly, with Obama’s election, renewed their faith in America. With the strokes of 63 million ballots, people have forgiven (though not forgotten) our country’s behavior on the international stage since 9/11. Like estranged family members ready to patch things up, the world sees our collective vote as a gesture of global goodwill. You can see it for yourself in Wednesday’s headlines from the South China Morning Post, the Jerusalem Post, the Johannesburg Mail & Guardian, El Universal of Venezuela and the Arab News. The world is on America’s side once again, because the world sees America as back on its side.

This is a lot to swallow. You’re skeptical and suspicious. You’re used to supporting politicians who claim government doesn’t work and then prove that claim once they get into office. Here’s the critical difference between the government you’ve come to know and the one you will meet in 2009: Obama will try. Instead of working to stall, starve and stop government, Obama and his administration will identify where and how government can best help. They won’t treat government as the enemy but as a resource. They won’t view government as the solution to life’s problems but, rather, they will help sculpt a landscape that allows you to more easily build that better life for yourself.

If you can’t get on board just yet, I ask this—stop reading and forwarding those emailed rumors and alarms and expand your informational intake beyond Limbaugh, Drudge and FOX News, and leave room for a president with positive, progressive ideas to light the way for a lost nation. In 2012, your greatest fear about Obama might be having to admit that, four years earlier, you were wrong about him.

Here Comes the Protestors

I was reading an article about how Westboro Baptist Church is going to protest at four TN cheerleaders' funerals. Their press release says "God Hates Tennessee" and says the cheerleaders "died for Tennessee's sins."They are the controversial people that have been protesting at military funerals all over the country. I decided that I would check out their webpage. http://www.godhatesfags.com/ After further investigation on their website I found out that they are coming to Hampton Roads from December 1-December 3, 2008 to protest at our military bases and hospitals. On December 1, they are going to Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in VA Beach. On December 3, they are headed to Fort Story Army Base and Oceana Naval Air Station in VA Beach, to Norfolk Naval Station and to Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.

I really can't believe the hate that they spread under the guise of Christianity. Can one of my biblical scholar friends please read this picket schedule and help me understand what is wrong with them? I know that none of you actually believe the same way.

Bittersweet Victory

Last night we saw an amazing thing happen in history. The first African-American was elected as President. I am so happy about that because he was the best choice for the job. It is also great that the Democrats will control such a large percentage of the Senate and House of Representatives.

The thing that made me really sad that America voted against gay rights all over the country. In Arkansas they voted against Initiative Act I which is An Act Providing that an Individual who is Cohabiting Outside of a Valid Marriage May Not Adopt or be a Foster Parent of a Child Less than Eighteen Years Old. That also discriminates against us heterosexual unmarried couples. In California they voted for Proposition 8 which is for a gay marriage ban. In Florida they voted for Proposition 2 that says Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized."

I am very shocked that there is so much bigotry in this country. Using your religion to discriminate against a whole group of people is not what God would want you to do. Maybe you should read the whole bible and not just a couple of verses.

Election Results

Check out the election results as they come in.

Go Vote!

Don't forget to vote today! This is a very important election and they are saying that Virginia is the most important state. I waited in line for over 3 hours this morning and I didn't care. It was nice to hear other stories from people about why they are voting for Obama. Our country can't afford 4 more years of the same old crap.

Check out http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/ Nate Silver is showing that McCain has a 1.1% chance of winning the election. That is very hopeful!

6 Months After the Tornado

Today it has been 6 months since a tornado hit my house. It is election time for the mayor in the city of Suffolk so I have to make my thoughts known. This is very long.

On April 28, 2008, I looked outside my window and I saw a tornado across the street from my house. I picked up my then 8 month old daughter and headed to the middle of the house. I grabbed a queen size mattress in one hand while I was holding my daughter in the other hand and ran to the bathroom. Yes, adrenaline turns you into superwoman. I felt my house shake and heard what sounded like a train. The wind blew my AC window unit inside my house and I just knew that was the end. I put my body over my daughter hoping that any debri would fall on me and not her. The few seconds seemed like hours. The tornado siren went on after it finally went through my neighborhood. Luckily my house was still standing. I went outside and it looked like a disaster area. My front porch was standing straight in the air, my back porch was caved in from a tree, my shed had a tree on it and there were trees that missed my house by inches on each side. God was really looking out for us because if one of the trees would have fell inches to the right it would have fallen on top of us.

The house next to me had trees everywhere and they lost about 5 or 6 vehicles. They had 7 people in their house that day. The mom was standing outside on the front porch and saw the tornado coming. She had been watching the news all day and she was prepared. She had a fanny pack with all important information and had even written her kids name on them with a permanent marker. She packed up her 5 year old and her then 5 month old and got in her van. Her 2 other children, one of her kid's pregnant girlfriend and a friend also got in vehicles. They took off toward the Driver section of Suffolk. The tornado actually followed them down Kings Highway. Her back bumper was torn off and it was being lifted in the air. Luckily she accelerated enough that her van and her children were not tossed in the air. She looked in her rear view mirror and saw the tornado destroy Driver.

My neighbors 2 doors down were also affected. They are an elderly couple. They were standing outside when they saw the tornado headed to their house. They had just seconds to get inside. A tree fell on their house and they lost vehicles and other property. They have yet to move back in their house.

I have not spoken to the other people that were affected on my road. One house is abandoned and the other house is a summer vacation home.

Our electricity was out for 4 days after and we had to live in a hotel. We went home every day to try to clean the debri inside and out of our house. We are from Arkansas and do not know anybody here. There was nobody to help us with anything at all. The elderly couple that lives 2 doors down from us is from Florida and they don't know anybody here either.

The neighbor with all the children was really lucky. Her family is from Virginia and they had about 20 people coming to their house within hours to remove trees and board up windows. The next day their house was clear of all debri. There are 2 houses on one property and they live in one house and we live in the other. The trees were cleared around their house but not around ours. It kind of depressed me to know that people in Suffolk actually cared about them and wanted to help.

I started calling the many department in the City of Suffolk starting the day of the tornado. I called the Linda Johnson's Office. You name the department and I called them. I never received a response from anyone. I watched the media coverage of the aftermath in the Driver area, Obici area and Burnett's Mill from my hotel room. It amazed me at the amount of people that were helping with the clean up. Linda Johnson was there and so was Tim Kaine. I thought the people in Suffolk would be that nice and come help us too after they were done with the larger areas of devastation. I was wrong, wrong, wrong!

On May 6, eight days after the tornado, a deacon from Celebration Church (they have services on Sundays at the YMCA starting at 10:00 am) just happened to drive down our road. He saw the trees everywhere and asked us if anyone was helping us. Of course we said that nobody in the entire city of Suffolk had offered to help us. At this point nobody from the City had been to our house. Did they even know that we were affected? Do I live in an invisible section of Suffolk? The next day on May 7, a representative from the United Way came to visit us. They saw the damage and gave us some Walmart cards. All of our groceries were ruined so it was nice buying food again. On May 8, 10 days after the tornado, finally a person from the Department of Planning and Community Development showed up. They assessed the damage and I told them about the huge tick problem. After over a week with all the trees in our yard and our neighbors 2 doors door from us their were ticks EVERYWHERE. My poor dog had tick bites all over her and contracted Lyme Disease. A few other people on my road got the disease too. We couldn't afford to pay someone to remove the trees and our landlord was being a butt. He is a tight wad and wouldn't help us! We definitely couldn't afford to move either.

Then I went to the community meeting. Linda Johnson and the city manager both stood up on the stage and said that we could call them at any time and could even call them at home. They showed a list of the communities that were affected by the storm and you guessed it my road was nowhere on the list. I felt very unimportant an invisible yet again.

A few days later I found out that the City wouldn't spray for ticks until my trees were removed. I am very thankful that the Celebration Church offered to put us up in a hotel for a month and actually paid for my dog to be taken to the vet. They also got someone to spray for ticks in our house. Another person that helped us out a lot was Angela Koncz. She is the founder of the Suffolk Fuller Center. The Army asked her if there was anyway that they could help the storms victims. On May 10, a whole group of people from the Army came and cleared trees and helped clean up our road. All I could do that day was cry and tell everyone thank you.

Six months later the residents on my road are still affected every day. The female neighbors and myself have severe anxiety every time it storms. Sometimes I just go hide in the bathroom and cry when I see the wind blowing the trees. My neighbor's pregnant girlfriend almost went into preterm labor because of her anxiety. I still do not have my shed fixed and there is a very large tree that is still sitting beside my house. Every time I go outside my house I am reminded that I was an invisible citizen of Suffolk.

The real heroes of the tornado aftermath was not the City of Suffolk at all and especially not Mayor Linda Johnson. The churches, community organizations and the military were the people that really helped storm victims. Remember when you go to the polls on November 4 that we do not need a city government that does not care about its smallest citizens. Don't vote for Linda Johnson or you will be invisible too.

Why I am Voting for Obama

I have been inspired to speak about why I am voting for Barack Obama on November 4. He is actually not liberal enough for me but I am still supporting him. I am a Southern Baptist preacher's daughter, a Christian, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend and a rape and domestic violence victim. That is why I am a liberal.

One of the most important issues to me is health care. I do not have health insurance and neither does my 13 month old daughter. I only work part time because day care expenses in VA are outrageous. I do not fully agree with either candidates plan on health care but Obama's is the best. He plans to lower health care costs, offer new affordable health insurance options and require insurance companies to cover pre-exisiting conditions. It is a step in the right direction but we need to eventually go with Hillary Clinton's universal health care plan.

Women's issues are also very important for me because I have a daughter. McCain and Palin do not care about issues concerning women. John McCain voted no for the Violence Against Women Act. That bill is very important to me because it provides money for domestic violence shelters and judicial and law enforcement programs to prevent violence towards women. Joe Biden was the author of that bill. McCain also does not care about women in the workplace. He voted against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which would ensure equal pay for women. He also opposes expanding the Family Medical Leave Act. Another important issue for women is abortion and family planning. Obama supports a woman's right to choose and would put pro-choice Supreme Court justices on the bench. McCain and Palin oppose abortion in all cases even when the person is raped or is a victim of incest. Palin even wanted women who have been raped to pay for their own rape kit. As a rape victim I am outraged that people still have the opinion that abortion is wrong.

As a tree hugging vegetarian the environment is very important to me. I tried to read John McCain's plan on his website and it sounded like nonsense. Sarah Palin would be the worse VP and biggest threat to animals and the environment in the history of the United States! She supports aerial hunting of wolves, she sued the Interior Department for putting polar bears on the endangered species and advocates drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. That is very scary that she would be that close to being the President. John McCain is old and has health problems. Obama's plan is easy and simple to understand. He wants to get 1 million hybrid cars on the road by 2015, create millions of green jobs to develop clean energy technology and reduce greenhouse emission by 80%.

I also have to respond to the emails and bulletins I receive on MySpace from so called Christians. I am amazed at how many bigoted and racist people there are! Apparently I am going to hell because I am voting for a Democrat. Here's some of my favorite bible verses that tell me differently.
-Love your neighbor as yourself. .[Matthew 22:39]
-So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you.[Matthew 7:12.]
-If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. [Matthew 19:21]
-But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. [Luke 14:13 &14.]
-You cannot serve both God and Money. [Matthew 6:24.]
-I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despite-fully use you, and persecute you; [Matthew 5:44]
This is how I live my life and I wish other Christians would too.

I hope you can better understand my reasons that I am voting for Obama. This is a very important election! Go to the polls on November 4 and vote Barack Obama. He is the change that we need!

My next blog is going to be about the mayoral race in Suffolk, VA.

I got all of my information on this blog from the Barack Obama and John McCain websites.

Obama Rally

I really want Amaya to be involved in the political process so we went to a rally for Barack Obama yesterday at Newport News, VA. She has seen a former President(Bill Clinton) and the future President speak. We got there at 9:30 and had to walk 8 blocks to get to the end of the line. There was over 15,000 people there. The doors opened at 10:30 and we finally got in at 12:00. When we were at the beginning of the line they decided that no strollers were allowed and we couldn't have any drinks or food. I ended up holding her for 2 hours straight. He finally got there at 1:00 and it was amazing! Obama is one of the greatest speakers that I have seen. His main focus was to talk about health care. That is my most important issue this year in the Presidential Election. I am really pumped and I can't wait for November 4th!

Cloth Diapers

I decided to make the switch to cloth diapers at one year. I was thinking about all the waste I had contributed to when I was emptying out the diaper pail. I just got my first shipment of diapers yesterday and so far they are great! Pictures to come.

Amaya's Birthday

I've been so busy that I haven't had time to post about Amaya's Birthday! I can't believe my baby turned one on September 12!

We had a really nice time. On the 11th we rented a hotel room right on the beach. It was a 2 room suite with an ocean view. We tried to go to the beach that night but it was really windy and a little chilly. Amaya is terrified of the waves. I couldn't get her to even look at the water. We then took a little walk and got something to eat. Later that night we all got in the huge jacuzzi that was in the room. She really liked that! She fell asleep with the balcony open so she could hear the waves crashing on the beach. I had a hard time sleeping because I was thinking about how I was in labor just a year ago. It made me really sad!

The morning started out with a beautiful sunrise. There is nothing prettier than a sunrise on the beach! Amaya woke up so happy. She got to open some presents and then we ate breakfast on the beach. At 10:11am we sang Happy Birthday to her. Again I got emotional.

We left the beach and went to Chuck E. Cheese. Amaya loved it there. She played games with her daddy to win some tickets. She ate almost a whole piece of pizza and she was drinking out of a big kids cup with a straw. Her favorite part was when Chuck E. came out to dance. I think she is going to be musically inclined because she loves music and dancing.

We went home for the last part of her Birthday. We didn't have a party because all of our friends and family live 1,200 miles away or further. She opened the rest of her presents and ate some birthday cake. She got a whole bunch of good stuff! We had her highchair close to the couch so Sugar could get in on the cake pictures. It was so cute seeing those two eat cake together.

All in all it was a great day. She didn't have a party like the rest of the babies in the world but it was a very special day. I am so proud to have such an amazing one year old!

I will post some pics later.

We are watching Hurricane Hanna because we are in the projected path. It might be here by Saturday afternoon. Keep us in your thoughts! I am so terrified of storms since the tornado hit our house on 4/28/08.

Monday, September 1, 2008

Well, Amaya is turning out to be like her mom already. We took her to The Children's Museum and she played in the baby area. She was going around kissing all the boys and crawling after them. It was so adorable. She never gets to see baby boys so I'm sure it is very exciting for her! She has playdates with little girls.

Labor day is tomorrow and we are doing absolutely nothing. I'm going to attempt to cook a real recipe. Scary I know! I normally just like to eat fruits and veggies with no frills. We will see how it turns out.

I've also decided that it is time for me to start losing weight. I tip the scales at 235 right now. Two people told me congratulations on my pregnancy and I'm not even pregnant! That means I am really huge. Part of the weight was gained because of pregnancy and the other was after my car wreck. I would really like to have another baby in the next year. Losing weight will increase my chances that I will have a natural birth.

Teething Sucks

My poor baby has 2 teeth coming in on the top. She is so miserable. Nobody has had much sleep in the past 2 days.

On a happy note, we went to the park on Clint's birthday. Amaya loved the swings and the slides. There was also a dog park and she went crazy! She has this really loud squeal when she sees a dog. Everyone thought it was so cute.

My baby is sick

Amaya is sick for the first time! I took her to the doctor because she was coughing. The pediatrician said she has a cold. She is so miserable right now. I know your baby will eventually get sick but it is heartbreaking!

We went car seat shopping yesterday. Yes, Amaya is still in her infant seat. It is convenient for us and she loves to go to sleep in there. It is really hard to find a car seat to fit in the bucket seats in the back of the Mustang. I bought an Alpha Omega Elite. Cross your fingers that it will fit!

This is the blog for the Carter/Sutton family. I'm Jill and the mommy of the greatest almost 11 month old Amaya and 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier Sugar. Clint is the dad. We are not married and don't plan on it.
